The Great
Migration
Safari
8 Days Through the Heart of East Africa
Follow the Ancient Rhythm
of the Wildebeest
This 8-day journey traces the calving season migration through Tanzania’s southern Serengeti, Ndutu plains, and the volcanic grandeur of Ngorongoro โ an experience defined by raw wilderness, intimate game drives, and the thundering pulse of over a million wildebeest on the move.
Beginning at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll travel through Tarangire National Park โ famous for its towering baobab trees and dense elephant herds โ before descending into the Ngorongoro Crater, one of Africa’s most spectacular natural amphitheatres.
The journey then carries you deep into the Ndutu area, where wildebeest calve in their thousands each year between December and March, before culminating in the Central Serengeti’s legendary game-viewing plains around Seronera.
The Serengeti โ Where the Wild
Has No Boundary
The Serengeti National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, covers approximately 14,763 square kilometres of sweeping savannah, acacia woodlands, and kopje-dotted plains in northern Tanzania. Its name derives from the Maasai word siringet โ “the place where the land runs on forever.”
The park is the stage for the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth: the Great Migration, a continuous circular movement of over 1.5 million wildebeest, 300,000 zebra, and 500,000 gazelle following the rains across the SerengetiโMara ecosystem. It is the largest overland migration of any mammal on the planet.
Different zones of the Serengeti offer distinct experiences. The Southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains are the calving grounds (DecemberโMarch), while the Western Corridor sees dramatic river crossings later in the year. The Central Serengeti around Seronera offers year-round big cat sightings โ lions, leopards, and cheetahs all call this region home.
The Great Migration
The world’s largest animal movement โ a survival instinct driven by rainfall and grass growth across the vast ecosystem.
Predator Density
The Serengeti supports Africa’s largest lion population and one of the highest concentrations of cheetah and leopard on the continent.
Ndutu Calving Season
From December to March, the southern Ndutu plains host over 500,000 wildebeest calves born within weeks of each other โ a breathtaking natural phenomenon.
Birdlife & Diversity
Over 500 bird species recorded, including the secretary bird, kori bustard, lilac-breasted roller, and vast flocks of flamingo on seasonal lakes.
Your 8-Day Journey
Detailed Itinerary
Each day is crafted for maximum wildlife encounters, with early morning and late afternoon game drives timed to predator activity and the golden hours of the African savannah.
Arrival Day
Welcome to Tanzania! Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met by your Afronia Tours representative for a warm transfer to your accommodation in Arusha. Enjoy an evening orientation briefing, a welcome dinner, and preparation for the adventure ahead. Arusha sits at the foot of Mount Meru and serves as the gateway to Tanzania’s northern safari circuit.
Tarangire National Park
After breakfast, depart for Tarangire National Park โ a landscape of giant baobab trees, the Tarangire River, and remarkable concentrations of elephant. During the dry season, hundreds of elephants gather at the river in one of East Africa’s most dramatic wildlife spectacles. Afternoon game drive along the Tarangire River valley. Overnight at a tented camp within or near the park boundary.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Journey toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, passing through the Great Rift Valley and Maasai bomas along the way. Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater โ the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 260 sq km enclosed ecosystem supports an extraordinary density of wildlife including the endangered black rhino, lions, hyena, elephant, and flamingo-draped soda lakes. Lunch is enjoyed on the crater floor.
Ndutu โ Southern Serengeti
Cross into the iconic Ndutu area โ the calving ground of the Great Migration. Between December and March, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves are born here, attracting the full cast of predators: cheetah, lion, wild dog, and jackal. The Ndutu plains offer vast, open scenery perfect for witnessing cheetah hunts and lion prides with cubs. Afternoon game drive on the short-grass plains.
Full Day in Ndutu
A full day dedicated to exploring the Ndutu ecosystem โ one of the most rewarding days of the entire safari. Early morning game drive at sunrise as predators return from nocturnal hunts. The Ndutu woodlands along Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek provide habitat diversity: leopard rest in fever trees, hippo wallow in the shallows, and thousands of wildebeest move in constant procession across the plains. Optional evening bush dinner under the stars.
Into Central Serengeti
Travel northward into the Central Serengeti and the famous Seronera Valley โ the ecological heartland of the park. This region is renowned as one of the best places on earth to observe leopard, given the density of riverine woodland and kopje granite outcrops where they rest. The Seronera River system also supports resident hippo pods and large crocodile. Afternoon drive through the rolling plains toward your central camp.
Final Game Drives
Your final full day in the Serengeti is reserved for immersive, unhurried game drives. Spend the morning and afternoon exploring the vast central plains and Seronera drainage. Resident lion prides, cheetah coalitions, and the ever-present herds of buffalo, topi, and impala define this landscape. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner at your camp with your guide sharing stories of the wild.
Departure Day
After a final sunrise over the Serengeti and breakfast at camp, transfer to Seronera Airstrip for your chartered flight back to Arusha. On arrival in Arusha, your Afronia Tours team will assist with onward connections and transfers to Kilimanjaro International Airport. Depart Tanzania with memories of one of the world’s greatest wildlife experiences โ the ancient drama of the Great Migration.
